Inclement weather looms over the capital; today, August 12, a yellow alert has been issued across all municipalities due to potential rain and hail.

Heavy Rain and Possible Hail Alert Issued for Mexico City

Residents of Mexico City are advised to take precautions as a yellow alert has been activated for heavy rains and possible hail on Tuesday, August 12. The alert applies to all districts of the city.

To stay safe during the anticipated rainfall, which is expected to range from 15 to 29 millimeters, the Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat (SGIRPC) recommends the following measures:

  1. Stay Dry: Carry an umbrella or raincoat to protect yourself from the heavy rain that is forecasted between 14:00 and 23:00 hours.
  2. Avoid Flooded Roads: It is crucial to avoid driving or walking through flooded areas as water depth can be deceptive, and streets may have ponding or flooding, increasing the risk.
  3. Caution Outdoors: Be aware of strong wind gusts (up to 45–50 km/h) and the potential for hail, which can cause injury or damage.
  4. Street Flooding and Traffic Disruptions: Expect possible street flooding and traffic disruptions, especially in affected boroughs like Álvaro Obregón, Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Iztacalco, Magdalena Contreras, and Venustiano Carranza.
  5. Stay Informed: Stay informed through local alerts and be prepared for emergency responses such as road closures or mobilization of Civil Protection crews.

In addition to these specific recommendations, residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor objects that could be moved by wind, and be prepared for sudden weather changes.

These guidelines aim to reduce risks to pedestrians, drivers, and property during intense summer rainstorms and hail events in Mexico City. It is also important to avoid telephone and electricity poles, climbing onto scaffolds, rooftops, or cornices, staying away from places near walls, trees, power lines, and billboards that are visibly at risk of falling.

It is not recommended to pour fats into the drainage system, and it is advised to sweep and keep storm drains clear of debris or objects that could block them. Instead, use liquid to water plants.

By following these guidelines, residents of Mexico City can help ensure their safety during the yellow alert for heavy rains and possible hail on Tuesday, August 12.

The weather-forecasting for the upcoming day predicts heavy rains and possible hail in Mexico City, urging residents to take necessary precautions as per the recommendations issued by the Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat (SGIRPC). To stay safe and reduce risks during this weather event, residents should follow measures like staying dry, avoiding flooded roads, and being cautious outdoors to avoid potential injury or damage.
