Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Forecast Across Nigeria: Precautionary Measures Advised

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Nigeria, with a particular focus on flood-prone areas, on Tuesday, 12th August, 2025. In response, local authorities, emergency services, and relevant stakeholders have been urged to remain on high alert.

According to NiMet's forecast, various states will experience thunderstorms with moderate rains in the afternoon/evening. These include FCT, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi States, as well as Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa States. In the morning, light rains are expected in Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, FCT, and Niger States, while parts of Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States in the Southern region will experience light rains.

Given the high flood risk predicted, NiMet has warned that persistent rainfall in Benue poses a high flood risk, and has also highlighted a high risk of flooding in parts of Adamawa and Taraba States due to persistent rainfall.

To mitigate the potential impact of the expected flooding between August 10 and 15, 2025, key precautionary measures have been advised. These include clearance and maintenance of drainage channels to ensure free flow of water and prevent urban flooding, evacuation of vulnerable populations in flood-prone and riverine areas, deployment of rapid response teams and trained rescuers ready for emergency interventions, activation of emergency operations centers and establishment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, continuous public enlightenment campaigns, and the provision of life jackets to communities living along rivers and flood-risk zones.

These preparations align with NiMet's forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across Nigeria during this period, and the Federal Government's national flood warnings emphasizing the northern states as particularly vulnerable. Efforts also involve coordination with agencies like NEMA to provide disaster risk reduction training and emergency preparedness support in affected states.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take these precautionary measures seriously and stay informed about the evolving weather situation. NiMet's forecasts predict sunny, cloudy, and rainy days across Nigeria this week, with widespread thunderstorms and rainfall expected. The agency has also predicted three days of rainfall and thunderstorms across various states.
