Inclement Weather Alert: Torrential Rain and Thunderstorms Approaching Maharashtra, Kerala, Northeast, and Delhi; Warning Systems Activated in Multiple Regions as Monsoon Progresses

The Southwest Monsoon, which covers parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and several other regions, has advanced further into Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Northeastern states, according to meteorological reports. This development is set to bring about a revival of the vigorous Southwest Monsoon activity between August 12 and 20, 2025, increasing the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa, and the Konkan region, including Mumbai.

This anticipated rainfall surge is primarily due to a low-pressure area expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 13. This system will develop into a depression and move westwards, intensifying rainfall over Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and adjoining areas.

Key details for the affected regions over the next week include:

  • Kerala and Coastal Karnataka: Despite a brief lull, rainfall is expected to continue intermittently with moderate to heavy rain through mid-August as the monsoon revives.
  • Goa and Konkan (including Mumbai): Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast from August 12 to 16, with monsoon conditions intensifying following the formation and westward movement of the low-pressure system. Mumbai, located in Konkan, may experience significant rainfall from around August 14 onward.
  • Maharashtra (including Mumbai and Madhya Maharashtra): Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, with isolated very heavy rainfall possible, especially from August 14 to 16 as the monsoon trough aligns normally and the depression moves inland.

The first half of August saw below-normal rainfall, but the monsoon is poised for a strong revival, bringing considerable heavy rain spells to these Western Ghats and coastal regions over the coming week, enhancing water availability but also raising flood risk locally.

Elsewhere, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur have been fully covered by the monsoon, while Assam and Meghalaya have partially received the monsoon. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Kerala and Karnataka, and heavy showers are set to drench large parts of west India, including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts widespread moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) across southern states. No unusual disruptions such as prolonged breaks or drought conditions are forecasted in these areas for the period beyond August 12. The monsoon is expected to behave normally or above normal in most southern and western regions during this phase.

Weather-forecasting models predict that the heavy to very heavy rainfall in Goa and the Konkan region, including Mumbai, will persist from August 12 to 16, coinciding with the westward movement of the low-pressure system.

The advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Northeastern states has been attributed to weather-forecasting reports, leading to a surge in rainfall activity over these regions between August 14 and 16.
