In a regrettable turn of events, a racist slur was reportedly used during the DFB-Pokal match between Lok Leipzig and FC Schalke 04. The offensive language, which included the use of the "N-word", has no place in sports or society, and Leipzig has promptly filed a complaint with the police.

Under German law, the use of racist language by spectators at sports events is illegal. The Strafgesetzbuch (StGB) Section 130 prohibits hate speech and incitement to hatred, with offenders facing criminal prosecution, including fines and imprisonment. Additionally, sports governing bodies like the German Football Association (DFB) impose their own disciplinary measures, such as stadium bans and fines for clubs where racist incidents occur.

Recent incidents of racist abuse at German Cup games have sparked investigations by German police and the DFB, reflecting the enforcement of these regulations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly condemned such behaviour and emphasised cooperation between football authorities and law enforcement to ensure players and fans are protected from discrimination and abuse.

The incident in question involved substitute player Christopher Antwi-Adjei being insulted with racist slurs. After the game, Antwi-Adjei publicly stated that the "N-word" was shouted from the stands. He expressed his dismay that racism is still prevalent worldwide and called for it to not be tolerated.

The hosts are reviewing video footage from surveillance cameras in the area where the racist slur was shouted, and the club has already received some leads regarding the culprit. The club aims to impose a lifetime ban and exhaust all legal means if the culprit is found.

Leipzig later apologised to Antwi-Adjei and FC Schalke for the incident. The game, which ended in a 0:1 defeat for Leipzig, was paused for a few minutes at 0:0 due to the reported racism incident. Both sets of fans in a separate match between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf chanted "Nazis out", demonstrating the united stand against racism.

Antwi-Adjei used his Instagram account to speak out against racism, thank fans and some Leipzig players for their support, and advocate for others who have experienced similar incidents. After the game, there were whistles directed at Antwi-Adjei from many Leipzig fans whenever he touched the ball.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf stated that the Control Committee of the German Football Association has also initiated investigations. The fight against racism in sports continues, and it is crucial that everyone involved - players, fans, and authorities - work together to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all.
