Incident captured: A heated exchange between South Africa and Bangladesh Emerging teams leads to an unsavory incident where a bowler seizes the batter's helmet.
In a heated on-field incident during the second unofficial Test between South Africa's and Bangladesh's Emerging teams, bowler Tshepo Ntuli and batter Ripon Mondol engaged in a physical altercation. The clash took place on day two of the match, which began on May 27 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The South African team was put in to field after Bangladesh opted to bat first. By the end of day one, the hosts had reached 242-7, with Iftakhar Hossain Ifti scoring 109 and Moin Khan 91. On day two, the lower order fought back with partnerships of 45 and 67 for the eighth and ninth wickets respectively, taking Bangladesh to 286-8 after 104 overs.
The incident in question occurred when Ripon Mondol hit a straight six off the bowling of Tshepo Ntuli in the 105th over. As Mondol walked towards his partner Mehidy Hasan, Ntuli approached him, leading to a heated exchange. The two players shoved each other before Ntuli grabbed the grille of Mondol's helmet. The umpire and several South African fielders stepped in to separate the pair.
It remains unclear what specifically sparked the confrontation between Ntuli and Mondol. Ntuli eventually dismissed Mondol 12 overs later for 43, leaving Bangladesh's total at 371.
Video footage of the altercation is available online.
In the wider context, the match is part of a series between the two teams as they prepare for international competition. South Africa's next competition is a Test series against Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh will face Pakistan in T20Is.
