In March 2024, the Archbishop of Bamberg, Herwig Gössl, will officially take his seat during an inauguration ceremony. This announcement was made by the archdiocese's spokesperson on December 9, 2023, following the Holy See's decision to promote Gössl from auxiliary bishop. The long-serving Archbishop Ludwig Schick stepped down in November 2022, giving way for a younger leader to handle the challenges ahead.

In his career, Gössl, born on April 13, 1957, in Oberstdorf, Germany, has served as a parish priest and a member of the diocesan administration. He studied theology at the University of Regensburg and was ordained as a priest in 1984. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Bishop of Augsburg, and Pope Francis elevated him to Archbishop of Bamberg in 2020.
