Russian Junior Championships (U24) in Ulan-Ude: 339 Athletes Gear Up for Competition

The Russian Junior Championships (Under 24) is set to take place in Ulan-Ude, the capital city of the Republic of Buryatia, in just two days. This prestigious national competition aims to identify and nurture young talent across various sports disciplines in Russia.
Qualification Criteria
To participate, athletes must be under 24 years old, Russian citizens or officially licensed by the Russian sports federations, have achieved minimum benchmark scores or ranking placements in regional competitions or national junior leagues, receive approval or nomination by their regional or sports federation, and comply with medical fitness certificates and doping control regulations.
Schedule
The Championships will span several days, structured by discipline and stages. Day 1 will be dedicated to athlete registration, medical checks, and technical meetings. Qualification rounds will take place on Days 2 and 3, followed by semi-finals and finals on Days 4 and 5. The closing ceremony, including the awarding of medals and titles, is scheduled for Day 6.
Notable Participants and Competitions
Several promising athletes are expected to participate in this year's competition. These include Alexey Ivanov, a rising star in athletics, Maria Petrova, a gymnastics champion, Dmitry Kuznetsov, a biathlete, Elena Smirnova, a swimmer, Vasily Grigoryev, a Spartakiada Youth Games winner, and two-time Russian Junior Champion (U21) Eduard Popov.
Competitions in the 57, 65, 74, 86, 97kg weight classes will begin on August 14, with the 61, 70, 79, 92, 125kg weight classes scheduled for August 15. Last year's European Junior Champion Andrei Midlovets will compete in the new 65kg weight class.
Remarkable Circumstances
Nine Yakut wrestlers without secured spots have yet to pay the 20,000 ruble participation fee, and some wrestlers from the Republic of Sakha's team have not secured their spots and will be competing at their own expense. After his disappointing performance at the Russian Championships in Moscow, Lev Pavlov, the European U23 champion, aims to rectify his mistakes and secure a spot in Serbia.
Yakut fans are hopeful for 3-4 medal wins, and Sakhapress is monitoring the events of the Russian Junior Championships. As of now, 339 athletes from 30 regions have registered for the championship. This championship serves as a qualifier for the October World U23 Championships in Serbia.
