In the wake of the "Klar" controversy, the succession of Julia Ruhs has been confirmed.
In a significant personnel shift, journalist Julia Ruhs will be leaving the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and moving exclusively to Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), while Tanit Koch will take over the moderation and co-editing of the news magazine 'Clear' produced by NDR.
The decision comes after months of internal debate within NDR regarding the journalistic leadership of 'Clear.' Approximately 250 employees signed a protest letter against the show, leading to significant resistance within the organisation.
Julia Ruhs, who previously presented 'Clear,' will no longer appear on the show. The BR, on the other hand, will continue to produce future episodes of the news magazine that Ruhs will present. The production of 'Clear' will continue to be produced alternately by NDR and BR, as it was in the pilot phase.
Tanit Koch, who currently authors for 'Focus,' brings a wealth of journalistic experience to her new role. She has previously served as editor-in-chief of the 'Bild' newspaper and the RTL central editorial office. Koch's political affiliations are evident, having led the election campaign communication for the CDU's chancellor candidate Armin Laschet in 2021.
The internal controversies surrounding 'Clear' seem to have led to its internal restructuring. The focus on migration caused internal disputes, with parts of the staff accusing Ruhs and her team of one-sided reporting.
The decision by NDR regarding 'Clear' has not been without political consequences. Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) have criticised the internal restructuring of the news magazine. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann even suggested freezing the broadcasting fee in response to NDR's decision.
Despite the internal controversies, internal surveys showed that viewers gave the format above-average good ratings. The new episodes of 'Clear' are not planned until 2026.
This personnel shift marks the end of a long internal debate within NDR. As Julia Ruhs moves on to her new role at BR, Tanit Koch steps into 'Clear' with the aim of putting the news magazine on a new footing, following the internal resistance against Ruhs.
