In the Trump era, is the US democracy experiencing a decline in free speech?

In the midst of a deeply divided nation, the political landscape in the United States has become increasingly heated, with the shooting of conservative figure Charlie Kirk acting as an accelerant in some parts.

Recent events have seen a series of developments that have raised concerns about freedom of speech and press freedom. The late-night talk show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, known for its pointed criticism of the US President's politics, has been temporarily removed from the schedule by ABC US Media. The removal was due to Kimmel's remarks about Kirk's shooting.

Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert, another late-night talk show host, has announced his retirement in May 2026. The announcement sparked criticism, with some suspecting CBS acted out of consideration for the US President.

The US President, Donald Trump, has celebrated the move on the Truth Social platform as 'good news for America.' However, the US television host Kimmel was reported to have implied that the Make America Great Again movement was trying to capitalize politically by suggesting the suspect had leftist ideology.

The political sphere has been felt to be increasingly harsh for some time, according to former US President Barack Obama, who criticized it for becoming increasingly politicized. Obama stated that if extremist views are given the weight of the United States government, 'we have a problem.'

This sentiment was echoed by JB Pritzker, the Democratic Governor of Illinois, who criticized the move, stating that freedom of speech is at stake. In response, The New York Times has stated that they will not be deterred by intimidation tactics.

The US President, Donald Trump, is planning to sue the New York Times for billions, claiming it is a 'corrupt' and 'virtual mouthpiece' of the radical left Democratic Party.

In the current climate, people have lost their jobs for posting comments on social media. For instance, a fired employee of an office supply chain allegedly refused to print flyers for a vigil for Kirk.

The US education authority is investigating teachers and staff in Texas following the shooting of Kirk. Elsewhere, former US Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, labeled ZDF correspondent Elmar Theveßen as 'left-wing radical' and called for his US visa to be revoked.

In response to Grenell's remarks, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on the US government to guarantee press freedom for foreign journalists. The US State Department has threatened consequences for foreigners who justify violence online, with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau instructing consular representatives to take action. However, the State Department has not provided details about the actions they will take against foreigners, nor have they provided examples or evidence of alleged actions by foreigners.

As the debate over freedom of speech and press freedom continues, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape the political landscape in the United States.
