In the radioactive waters of Fallout 76, players can now engage in fishing activities, but the significant battle adjustments introduced in the 'Gone Fission' update have aroused greater interest.
Venturing into the Mire with Fallout 76's Gone Fission Update!
Hey there,
When it comes to fishing minigames, I'm generally not a fan for a multitude of reasons. However, the exquisite/terrible title of Fallout 76's latest update, Gone Fission, gets my nod of approval based on my affection for puns. That's not all this update offers, though, as it introduces substantial changes to combat that definitely has my attention!
First, let's talk fishing. Head to Fisherman's Rest in the Mire and meet a chap named The Fisherman (now you've got me wishing Bethesda put some effort into naming characters like this for everything, huh?). The Fisherman gives the questline Casting Off, guiding you to acquire a fancy new fishing rod. Toss your line anywhere that's wetter than a puddle in Fallout 76, but be prepared to catch only common fish and debris with your basic rod.
To reel in some elusive prey, like rare axolotls and radioactive glowing species, you'll need to upgrade your rod by completing fishing challenges, daily quests, and gathering higher-quality bait. Don't forget that the weather impacts your chances, so catch more rarities during rain, radstorms, and so on. And of course, don't forget to cook your catch and dress in some snazzy maritime-themed apparel and equipment!
The update also lets you set up a houseboat, furnish it with fishing rod displays, bottled octopi, and scuba gear. Why not try your strength on the Poseidon Arm Wrestling machine for good measure?
Now, onto the real meaty stuff - combat tweaks! Bethesda's been working on an extensive combat rebalancing project since last year, and Gone Fission delivers a heap of weapon adjustments as part of that.
Weapon damage has been bumped up across a wide assortment of rifles, SMGs, and more than 50 melee weapons. Various perks and weapon mods have also been rebalanced, with a shift towards making them more potent.
One specific change introduced by the update is to limb damage and crippling. Previously, certain weapons and mods possessed a percentage chance to instantaneously cripple limbs. However, crippling now occurs through consistent damage increases that culminate in crippling effects. This should make most enemies easier to cripple while making limb damage more consistent and predictable.
Here's where it gets interesting - bosses like Region Bosses become more resistant to limb incapacitation overall due to these changes.
The Gone Fission update is live now! Fallout 76 has certainly improved since its infamous empty launch in 2018. If you want to know more about how the studio turned the game around, check out former Bethesda designer Jeff Gardiner's chat with Jeremy Peel. Just remember, even if a game isn't perfect, there's often a good lesson to learn. As painful as it may be, it's those lessons that help us grow as gamers and developers alike.
