In the Modern Age of Baseball, Traditional History Slips Away with Introduced Regulations

In the thrilling 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, a three-way tie for the National League (NL) Wild Card berths unfolded between the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Arizona Diamondbacks. All three teams finished with a record of 89-73, with the Diamondbacks being eliminated due to losing the season series to both the Mets and Braves.

The Mets clinched a berth in a dramatic fashion, winning the first game of a make-up doubleheader against the Braves. In the second game, they benched most of their regulars, allowing Atlanta to secure a victory.

Meanwhile, the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Torey Lovullo, expressed his disappointment with the current tiebreaker system and preferred the old Game 163 tiebreaker rule. This preference was evident in the last MLB postseason of 2024.

Away from the postseason, the baseball world celebrated the induction of CC Sabathia into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025. Ichiro Suzuki was the headliner of the 2025 Hall of Fame Class, and he was the only living inductee among the five, which also included Billy Wagner, Dick Allen, and Dave Parker.

The 2025 All-Star Game, held in Atlanta, was decided by a home run swing-off, marking a significant change from the traditional extra innings. However, this new format prevented a dramatic end like the 1994 All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. The MVP award for the 2025 All-Star Game was given to Kyle Schwarber.

Controversy arose with the new rules in baseball, including the new All-Star Game format, as they took away the possibility of replicating the greatest games in baseball's history. Notably, the classic Game 163, such as the one played in 1978 between the Yankees and Red Sox, will never happen again due to the new rules.

The Hall of Fame only includes a small fraction of the 21,000 players who have worn a Major League Baseball uniform since the NL was founded in 1876. Despite this, the induction ceremony remains a celebration of baseball's past, staged in a town in upstate New York that is reminiscent of the past century.

Interestingly, Pete Rose, who was suspended for gambling on baseball, has recently been taken off the restricted list after his death last year and is now eligible to be voted in. However, controversial figures like Barry Bonds, barred by voters due to his involvement in MLB's steroid era, have yet to be voted into the Hall of Fame.

The tiebreakers for deciding everything from a division title to what team qualifies for one of three Wild Card berths between clubs are based on the best head-to-head record against each other. This system, while not without its own controversies, ensures that the regular season remains a crucial factor in determining a team's postseason fate.
