Thrilling "September 5" Takes Home Top Honors at German Film Awards
In the GermanFilm Awards, "September 5" emerged triumphant.
This year, the German Film Awards were grabbed by the captivating drama "September 5". The film, directed by Tim Fehlbaum, outshone the competition, securing an astonishing nine awards out of its ten nominations.
"September 5" is a gripping thriller that revolves around the terrorist attacks during the 1972 Munich Olympics. The story unfolds from the viewpoint of a U.S. television crew working to broadcast the competitions, instead becoming live reporters of the hostage-taking of Israeli athletes by a Palestinian terrorist group ([5]).
Notable performances were recognized during the awards ceremony, with Leonie Benesch bagging the Best Supporting Actress award ([1][5]). The script, direction, and editing were all celebrated for their exceptional quality.
Among the film's competitors was the political thriller "The Seed of the Holy Fig Tree" by Mohammad Rasoulof, which took home the Silver Lola, and "In Love, Yours, Hilde" by Andreas Dresen, winning the Bronze Lola.
One of the most poignant moments of the night was the unexpected announcement of Margot Friedländer's death. Igor Levit, a pianist, struggled to maintain his composure as he paid tribute to the Holocaust survivor, who was 103 years old. The audience stood at attention as Levit, originally set to give a laudation for Best Film Music, requested a moment of silence.
Liv Lisa Fries was awarded Best Leading Actress for her role in "In Love, Yours, Hilde" as an NS resistance fighter ([1][6]). Misagh Zare, representing "The Seed of the Holy Fig Tree", was named Best Leading Actor. Alexander Scheer and Sam Riley, both with two nominations in the leading category, went home empty-handed ([1][6]).
The German Film Awards draw a large crowd, with around 1,700 guests, including the new Minister of State for Culture, Wolfram Weimer, attending the ceremony at Berlin's Theater am Potsdamer Platz ([4]).
