Remco Evenepoel Takes Stage 5 Individual Time Trial Victory in the 2025 Tour de France

In a thrilling display of cycling prowess, Remco Evenepool (Soudal Quick-Step) claimed victory in the individual time trial on stage 5 of the 2025 Tour de France. The 33-kilometre flat course in Caen saw Evenepoel outshine his rivals, including Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Jonas Vingegaard.

Evenepoel's dominance in the time trial discipline was evident from the outset. At the first time check, he was faster than both Pogacar and Evenepoel. In the race's first week, Pogacar had taken over the yellow jersey, but Evenepoel's impressive performance threatened to shake things up.

Pogacar, however, held his own, finishing 17 seconds behind Evenepoel at the third and final timing check. Jonas Vingegaard, Evenepoel's closest rival, was almost a minute behind at the same point.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who was leading the race in the yellow jersey, lost significant ground in the time trial, losing 1:44 and relinquishing the race lead to Pogacar.

Evenepoel's time of 37 minutes and 43 seconds set a new average speed of 54km/h, a testament to his time trial mastery. Edoardo Affini of Visma-Lease a Bike had set the fastest time for much of the day, but Evenepoel managed to shave 33 seconds off his time to secure the stage win.

Ben O'Connor (Jayco AlUla) put in a strong performance, finishing 11th overall, 1:14 down on Affini. Kévin Vauquelin of Arkéa-B&B Hotels maintained his third place position after a valiant ride.

In the general classification, Pogacar now leads Evenepoel by 42 seconds, with Vingegaard in fourth, 1:13 behind Pogacar. Evenepoel expressed his satisfaction with his second stage win, commenting that he paced the time trial well.

Remco Evenepoel's victory on stage 5 further solidifies his status as one of the foremost time trial specialists in modern cycling. With multiple individual time trial victories in stage races, World Championship medals, Olympic gold, and stage wins in the Tour de France, Evenepoel continues to make a major impact in the sport.
