La Mirada High School Girls Basketball Team Makes History in CIF-Southern Section Division 4A Championship

The La Mirada High School girls basketball team made history on March 3, 2025, as they competed in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4A championship game. This was a significant milestone for the team, who have seen a remarkable improvement in their program over the years.

Five years ago, when the current seniors were freshmen, the team had a dismal 2-12 record. However, last season, they achieved an impressive 22-7 record, showcasing their dedication and hard work.

In the championship game, Jordin Shaw, a sophomore, led the team with five assists and a pair of steals. Shaw, who joined the team as a freshman, has fit in well with her teammates and expressed gratitude for the experience. Senior Jael Arreguin scored the only perimeter basket of the game for La Mirada High, 11 seconds into the second quarter. Emily Gonzalez, another senior, added 18 points and 14 rebounds to the team's total.

Despite the 55-40 loss to Pilibos High in the championship game, the team has made history since last year, according to Shaw. Coach Luong, who played high school basketball 20-something years ago, commented on the growth and heart of the current La Mirada High girls basketball team. Luong praised the team for their achievements and their dedication to the program.

The game took place at the Felix Event Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. This was the first time La Mirada High and Pilibos High had played each other. Although Pilibos emerged victorious, the La Mirada High team has high expectations for the future. Shaw emphasized that the team's expectations will remain high regardless of who is playing and who is not.

Following the championship game, La Mirada High will travel to top-seeded Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary High for the first round of the CIF Division 4 Southern California Regionals. The team is determined to continue making history and will undoubtedly face their challenges with the same dedication and team spirit they have demonstrated throughout the season.

The La Mirada community is abuzz with excitement after the girls basketball team's history-making performance in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4A Championship, despite the loss to Pilibos High. In the upcoming CIF Division 4 Southern California Regionals, the team plans to continue making waves, with their future matches highly anticipated as local sports events in the news.
