Germany's Greens Party lacked luster and appeared unappealing without Habeck, according to our columnist's assessment.

In the absence of Robert, the greenery loses its vibrancy.

Title: The Greens Lacking Presence Without Habeck, Call for His Return

Amidst the turbulent first weeks of the new government, the Green Party finds itself struggling to regain its footing. The absence of Robert Habeck, the party's former federal fluff minister and charismatic spokesman, is leaving a noticeable gap.

In a week marked by communicative ambivalence from Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Habeck's absence is particularly felt. Merz's performances at the "Republica" digital event in Berlin garnered attention for contrasting reasons—one involving potential arms restrictions in Ukraine and the other displaying unexpected Israel criticism, which resonated with many on the German political left.

However, the Greens have been unable to capitalize on these opportunities, as they seem to be lagging in their responses. On the issue of Ukrainian arms, Green members have called for a weapons delivery halt, while acknowledging the need for self-defense. Meanwhile, Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU) has been pushing a similar agenda.

The Greens' criticisms faced further challenges when their call for the special fund of €500 billion to enable "additional" investments instead of merely dispersing into public expenditure was overshadowed by economic experts within the CDU advocating for the same "additional" aspect.

controversy arose within the Green Party, with co-spokesperson of the Greens Youth Jette Nietzard sparking controversy by asking her followers if she should wear a pullover with an offensive slogan in the Bundestag. Such statements drew criticism and stoked larger discussions about the party's positioning and credibility.

The loss of Habeck, a potent communicator known for his calm, empathetic style, has exacerbated this situation. A left-wing petition by "Campact" featuring over half a million signatures calls for Habeck's return, seeking to restore the Greens' media prominence.

The possibility of Habeck rejoining the party, assuming Baerbock moves to the United Nations, remains speculative. Yet, Habeck's skill in crafting compelling narratives and his role as a strong advocate for climate action indicate a potential strengthening of the Green Party's environmental agenda if he resumes his position. However, if CSU leader Markus Söder's plans for a Northvolt investigation committee come to fruition, Habeck might face further scrutiny and potential political complications.
