Tennis Star Alexander Zverev Struggles with Health Issues in Cincinnati Masters

German tennis pro Alexander Zverev had a mixed performance at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters, where he reached the semifinals but faced health challenges that affected his gameplay.

In the opening set of his quarterfinal match against Ben Shelton, Zverev's powerful forehand caused problems for his opponent. He broke Shelton's serve twice and secured the set with his third ace. The match seemed to be going smoothly for Zverev, who led 5-1 in the first set. However, the heat and high humidity appeared to take a toll on the player, as he indicated breathing difficulties at the start of the second set.

Zverev's health issues became more pronounced during the match, requiring a medical timeout after breaking in the second set. Despite medical assistance, he admitted afterward that he was "not feeling too great" and was uncertain about the cause of his physical struggles. These issues persisted into his semifinal match against Carlos Alcaraz, where he again took a medical timeout but remained hampered, leading to a loss with a visibly labored movement and compromised aggressive style.

Despite the setbacks, Zverev managed to win the match against Ben Shelton with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in a 77-minute contest. The match was worth approximately $9.2 million (€7.9 million).

As Zverev prepares for the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season, which begins on August 24, he will face Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals on Saturday (local time). Meanwhile, the second semifinal of the Masters in Cincinnati will feature Jannik Sinner and Terence Atmane.

Throughout the tournament, Zverev almost had a perfect first set, and he did not face significant problems from Ben Shelton in the match. Shelton, however, was visibly frustrated, throwing his racket onto the court in frustration multiple times.

The Masters in Cincinnati serves as a crucial preparation for the US Open, and Zverev's performance, while affected by health issues, showcases his potential for the upcoming tournament. The question remains, however, whether Zverev will be able to overcome his physical struggles and compete at his full potential in the US Open.

During the Masters in Cincinnati, Alexander Zverev showcased his tennis skills in a match against Ben Shelton, scoring a 6-2, 6-2 victory. However, health concerns affecting his gameplay became increasingly evident during the tournament, particularly in his semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz.
