In Spite of Judicial Decisions: Minister Dobrindt Remains Steadfast in His Course
In a contentious move, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced that he will persist with blanket rejections of asylum seekers at Germany's borders, despite a court ruling in June that deemed his border control measure unlawful.
Dobrindt made this assertion in a statement to Die Zeit, where he also referenced the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. He justified the rejections by stating that asylum application numbers are clearly decreasing and have been absorbed by the population.
This decision has been met with criticism from various quarters, with Chancellor Angela Merkel expressing concerns that intensified border controls could shatter Europe. The Greens and Left party have also voiced their opposition to Dobrindt's policies.
However, Dobrindt has received support from within his own party, with fellow Union politicians viewing his hard migration policy as effective and deterrent for refugees. He has defended his measures against this criticism and has continued to pursue his line both internally and in cooperation with origin countries.
Dobrindt's stance is based on his belief that people should give it some time. He also stated that the experience on the street is different and it's a process, not a simple switch. He further added that constantly repeating international rules and abstract European norms might lead people to vote for other politicians.
In June, the Berlin Administrative Court ruled Dobrindt's border control measure unlawful, granting rights to three Somali refugees in an expedited procedure. Dobrindt, however, believes that the situation on the ground is different and that the process is ongoing.
This decision by Dobrindt has sparked a heated debate in German politics, with many questioning the legality and ethics of his actions. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this issue will unfold in the coming days and weeks.
