In the shocking aftermath, at least two lives have been claimed and over 100,000 residents are reeling from the consequences of Hurricane Erick in Southern Mexico. A tragic incident occurred in Oaxaca state, where a man perished from an electric shock during cleanup efforts [3]. Additionally, a child met a tragic fate while attempting to cross a flooded river alongside their mother in neighboring Guerrero state [3].

It's been reported that Oaxaca's 15 major roads were closed off, and 123,000 locals are grappling with power cuts [3]. Lagunas de Chacahua, a coastal village, has been gravely affected by the relentless storm, with roadways inundated and numerous houses and businesses completely obliterated [3]. As 45-year-old Francisca Ávila told AFP news agency, "It was fierce and frightening. The whole village is now roofless, bereft of clothing, and unassisted."

Hurricane Erick, a colossal and unprecedented tropical cyclone, hurled itself upon Southern Mexico in June 2025 [1][2]. This catastrophic storm was labeled an "extremely dangerous" hurricane by the NHC, growing to sustained winds of 145 mph before making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 mph in Oaxaca on June 19 [1][2]. Unfortunately, Erick was also the earliest major hurricane to strike Mexico's coast and the first Category 4 hurricane recorded to hit the Pacific coast before August.

Initially, the NHC announced that the hurricane had weakened to a tropical storm and was expected to dissipate by Friday night [3]. However, Mexican authorities continue to remind the populace of the ongoing danger of landslides and floods [3]. Tropical storms threaten Mexico's coastline from May through October [3].
