The Ukraine conflict continues to be a focus of international attention, with diplomatic efforts primarily centered around discussions between the United States and Russia. However, concerns have been raised about the exclusion of Ukraine from these talks, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizing the need for Kyiv's involvement in any negotiations for a viable and sustainable peace agreement.

In August 2025, a summit was held in Alaska between President Vladimir Putin and former President Donald Trump, aimed at paving the way for a cease-fire and an end to the war. While Putin praised Trump's peace efforts, he showed no indication of moving toward a cease-fire, raising strong concerns in Kyiv about the legitimacy and effectiveness of any agreements made without Ukraine's participation.

President Zelenskyy has emphasized that Ukraine should decide any territorial concessions and demanded binding security guarantees before any peace deal. He stressed the need for Ukraine’s full involvement in negotiations to avoid flawed agreements. The international community, especially the European Union, continues to apply sanctions and support Ukraine’s position in the peace process.

The European Union has taken a firm position, refusing to ease sanctions on Russia until a genuine peace deal is secured. This signals continued diplomatic pressure on Russia alongside military support to Ukraine, preventing premature concessions in negotiations.

Keir Starmer, the UK's Prime Minister, and Emmanuel Macron, the French President, have welcomed Trump's efforts to end the Ukraine conflict and reaffirmed their support for Zelensky. Starmer and Macron discussed working closely with Trump and Zelensky in the coming days to achieve a just and lasting peace.

US President Donald Trump is open to a three-way summit with Putin and Zelensky in Alaska. This comes as Zelensky has coordinated with representatives from the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland during a recent meeting.

Meanwhile, the conflict on the ground continues, with reports of drone attacks causing damage in Russian regions such as Saratov. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reports that Russia has lost 11,089 tanks, 23,107 armored vehicles, and 1,204 air defense systems during the conflict.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev, has expressed war-weariness among the people of Ukraine and called for negotiations with Russia. Klitschko also suggested that territorial concessions may be necessary for a diplomatic solution.

In a joint statement, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, the UK, Finland, and the EU Commission proposed that the current frontline should serve as the starting point for negotiations. The statement reiterates that international borders should not be changed by force and supports Donald Trump's efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.

As the diplomatic efforts continue, it is clear that the involvement of all parties, particularly Ukraine, is crucial for any meaningful progress towards a lasting peace.
