In an unsettling turn of events, Hamas has shared footage of a severely injured Israeli-Russian hostage, Maxim Herkin, held captive in Gaza. This release came as a response to an Israeli airstrike that left 11 Palestinians dead, including three infants, according to the territory's civil defense agency.

The conflict between the two entities escalated again on March 18, following the breakdown of a two-month ceasefire agreement aimed at halting the war that began with Hamas's attack in October 2023.

The health ministry in the Hamas-governed Gaza region reported that 2,396 people, since Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza, have lost their lives. This brings the overall death toll from the war to 52,495.

Gaza militants retain 58 hostages, as per the Israeli military's statement. Among these, it's reported that 34 of the hostages are assumed dead while Hamas still holds the remains of an Israeli soldier killed during a previous war in 2014.

In a chilling video released on Saturday, Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, presented Herkin, who turned 37 at the end of May. He was bandaged on his head and left arm. In the video, Herkin addressed the Israeli government in Hebrew, implying he was wounded in a recent Israeli bombardment. Though his health couldn't be verified by AFP, it reflected a similar message offered in videos of other hostages held by Hamas.

Herkin also appeared in a previous video released by Hamas in early April. He shared the screen with a second hostage believed to be Israeli soldier Bar Kuperstein. Both men were kidnapped by Palestinian militants from the Nova music festival during the Hamas attack of October 2023.

In total, 1,218 deaths occurred on the Israeli side, mostly civilians. Maxim Herkin had immigrated to Israel from Ukraine with his mother before his abduction.

A prior message written by Herkin to his mother read: "All is well. I'm coming home." Despite this, thousands of Israelis gathered outside the defence ministry in Tel Aviv, demanding decisive action from their government to secure the release of the hostages.

The Israeli government maintains that its renewed offensive aims to compel Hamas to free its remaining captives. However, critics suggest that such military actions pose grave risks to the hostages.

As mediators struggle to negotiate a new truce, Hamas has published several videos of hostages. The latest images come amidst stalled efforts to broker a new truce.

Incidentally, on Saturday, the Gaza civil defense agency reported that an overnight Israeli strike on the Khan Yunis refugee camp resulted in the deaths of 11 people, including three infants under one year old. The attack occurred at approximately 3:00 am (0000 GMT).

The agency spokesman, Mahmud Bassal, explained that eight of the deceased were from the same extended family, including a boy and girl, both one, and a newborn baby. An Israeli army spokesperson, upon confirmation of the strike, stated that the target was a "Hamas member."

Rescue workers and residents tirelessly searched the wreckage for survivors, relying on the light of hand-held torches. Neighbor Fayka Abu Hatab said, "I saw a bright light, then there was an explosion, and dust covered the entire area."

Following the resumption of aid blockades by Israel since March 2, there have been dire warnings from UN agencies about an impending humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
