In New Zealand, a group of more than 150 players establish a world record while significantly outscoring Zimbabwe, creating a substantial advantage in their match.

New Zealand Equals Historic Test Record in Bulawayo

In an unprecedented display of batting prowess, New Zealand's batsmen have matched a record set nearly a century ago in the world of Test cricket. During the ongoing Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, three New Zealand batters—Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, and Rachin Ravindra—scored 150 or more in a single innings.

This remarkable achievement, which has only been repeated twice before, was first achieved by England in 1938 against Australia, with Len Hutton, Maurice Leyland, and Joe Hardstaff all making 150+ scores. The second instance occurred in 1986 when India's Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Kapil Dev all surpassed 150 in a drawn Test against Sri Lanka at Kanpur.

On August 8, during the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, Conway (153), Nicholls (150), and Ravindra (165) all reached this prestigious milestone. This is the third time in history that a team has scored three or more individual 150-plus scores in a single Test innings.

As a result of this impressive batting performance, New Zealand now shares the record for the most 150-plus scores in a Test innings with England (1938) and India (1986).

Moreover, New Zealand is also within reach of surpassing their national record for the largest first-innings lead. Currently, the national record stands at 481 runs, set by New Zealand against Bangladesh in the 2019 Hamilton Test. However, with their current lead of 476 runs over Zimbabwe, New Zealand is well on its way to breaking this record.

The partnership between Nicholls and Ravindra is also noteworthy, as it is the third-highest for the fourth wicket for New Zealand. The previous best fourth-wicket partnership for New Zealand was 243 between Nathan Astle and Matt Horne in 1998, also against Zimbabwe. The current partnership between Nicholls and Ravindra has surpassed this record, forming an unbeaten 256-run stand.

As the Test match continues, New Zealand will aim to not only break their national record for the largest first-innings lead but also enter the all-time top three for largest first-innings leads. Currently, the all-time top three for largest first-innings leads are held by England (702 vs Australia), Sri Lanka (587 vs South Africa), and Pakistan (570 vs New Zealand).

It is yet to be seen whether New Zealand can achieve these milestones, but one thing is certain—their batting performance in the Bulawayo Test has already solidified their place in the annals of Test cricket history.
