In New York, it's been confirmed that the sailor who met a tragic end in the accident was not present during the event "Sail" in Bremerhaven.

The Mexican Navy's sail training ship, the Cuauhtémoc, has been a regular visitor to international ports, including Bremerhaven, and was expected to appear at Sail 2025 and future maritime events. However, a tragic incident in 2025 has changed the ship's schedule.

The Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two fatalities and 22 injuries among the 277 people on board. This incident has raised concerns about maritime safety and has caused the ship to forgo its planned appearances at upcoming events.

Despite the setback, the Cuauhtémoc has an active history of international port calls for training and public visits, including a docking in Jakarta in 2024 and previous visits to Bremerhaven in 2008 and 2016. The ship is also a key participant in sail training fleet events worldwide.

The Sail event in Bremerhaven is scheduled for August, and around 250 ships are expected to attend from August 13 to 17. However, the heavily damaged Cuauhtémoc will not be among them. The organizers of the Windjammer meeting have expressed their condolences and do not expect the ship to recover in time for the event.

The news from New York has shaken the Sail organizing committee, and they have expressed their condolences to the Mexican embassy. There has been no direct contact with the Cuauhtémoc's crew yet, but the main concern for the organizers is the recovery of the injured cadets.

The tourism chief does not expect an immediate official announcement about the Cuauhtémoc not coming to Bremerhaven. There is no waiting list to get another state ship as a replacement for the Cuauhtémoc, but it remains unclear if another ship will take its place at the event.

Ralf Meyer fondly recalls the visit of the Cuauhtémoc at the Lütten Sail in 2008, and Michael Gerber, managing director of Erlebnis Bremerhaven, expressed pleasure about the confirmation of the event. Despite the absence of the Cuauhtémoc, the Sail event in Bremerhaven is set to be a memorable event, showcasing major tall ships like the Cuauhtémoc, reflecting its status as a prominent sail training vessel.

The Cuauhtémoc was planned to appear at Sail 2020, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic. The ship's previous visits to Bremerhaven have been fondly remembered, and it is hoped that the ship will recover and return to the port in the future.
