Jonas Vingegaard Suffers Crash in Paris-Nice, Loses Race Lead

In a surprising turn of events, Jonas Vingegaard, the reigning champion of Paris-Nice, experienced a setback during stage five of the race. The Danish rider, a part of the Visma-Lease a Bike team, had a nasty fall on the Côte de Notre-Dame-de-Sciez.

Vingegaard's teammate, Victor Campenaerts, spoke to Sporza post-race, confirming that the rider was dropped on the steep finish, losing 26 seconds to Lenny Martinez. Martinez went on to win the stage, taking over the race lead from Vingegaard.

The incident left Vingegaard visibly in pain. He hurt his hand and could no longer use his left brake. Consequently, he finished the stage with a noticeable loss of strength. According to reports, he also suffered a cut to his upper lip and may have hurt his wrist during the crash. As a precaution, Vingegaard will visit the doctor to assess any potential injuries.

This is the first crash for Vingegaard since the high-speed incident at Itzulia Basque Country in April last year. The incident seemed to have affected his performance, with Vingegaard appearing to be less lucid during the race. He also experienced dizziness after the crash.

Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar, Vingegaard's great rival, had a similar experience at Strade Bianche the week before. Despite crashing, he went on to win the race. In the current standings, Matteo Jorgenson, another teammate of Vingegaard, now leads Paris-Nice, 22 seconds ahead of the Danish rider.

Regrettably, there is no available information about the doctor who treated Jonas Vingegaard after his fall on the Côte de Notre-Dame-de-Sciez during Paris-Nice. The team chose to stay out of the stress and move up the slopes, focusing on recovery and support for their injured rider.

Vingegaard's fans and supporters will undoubtedly be hoping for a swift recovery and a strong comeback in the remaining stages of the race.
