Blind Football Engages Spectators and Players in Regensburg

In the artificial turf pitch of BSC Regensburg, blind footballers from England, France, and Germany are battling for world ranking points and the victory in the Three-Country Cup. On Saturday, the final games of Germany against France (11 am) and France against England (6 pm) will determine the champion.

As of Friday, England has secured the best starting position with seven points, ahead of the German team (2) and France (1), following impressive double victories against France (5:1) and Germany (4:1). The German team and France will need to give their best to overcome England's lead.

The unique nature of blind football captivated the audience on the first tournament day. The players demonstrate remarkable skill in picking out the necessary instructions amid the noise, compensating for their lack of sight. A sighted goalkeeper in their own third, the coach in the middle third, and the goal guide in the offensive third are the voices for the blind players, who are mentally challenged as much as physically during the game. A rattle ball and the opposing team's mandatory commands near the ball ("Voy") contribute to the players' orientation.

Martin Mania, the young national coach of the German blind football team, shares the spectators' initial surprise. Mania, 32, had not previously heard of blind football until a friend introduced him to the sport. Upon witnessing the training, he was deeply drawn in by its intensity. After becoming champion with the team of the Blindenstudienanstalt Marburg, short Blista, one of the top teams in the German blind football league, and serving as a goal guide in the national team, Mania took on the role of national coach in January 2021. His ambitious goal is to lead the German team to the top three at the European Championships 2026 in Paris, where they have aims for a podium finish after two fourth places in 2013 and 2022.

Blind football, also known as blind soccer, involves specific methods for communication and navigation to ensure visually impaired players can effectively participate in matches. Key strategies include teamwork and voice guidance, ball tracking, spatial awareness, and the use of sound-emitting balls and other adapted equipment.

The Three-Nation Cup tournament at BSC Regensburg continued on Saturday with Germany and England drawing their game 1:1, France beating Germany 2:2, and England defeating France 5:1. England leads the standings with ten goals and seven points, followed by Germany with four goals and two points and France with three goals and one point. The upcoming games on Saturday will be Germany against France at 11 am and France against England at 18:00 on BSC Regensburg's artificial turf.
