In a landmark verdict, the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru has sentenced Prajwal Revanna, the former JD(S) MP and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, to rigorous life imprisonment for raping a 47-year-old domestic worker and filming the crime.

The conviction, which concluded a rapid legal process that lasted 14 months from the FIR to verdict, was based on damning evidence including video recordings of the assaults, DNA analysis, and testimonies collected by an all-women Special Investigation Team.

The case involved sexual assaults that took place at two locations: the family's farmhouse in Hassan and Revanna's residence in Bengaluru during the COVID-19 lockdown. The victim was repeatedly raped, with the court applying Sections 376(2)(n) and 376(2)(k) of the Indian Penal Code. In addition to life imprisonment, Revanna was fined Rs 11.5 lakh, with Rs 11.25 lakh to be paid to the survivor as compensation.

Revanna began his life sentence at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru on August 3, 2025, where he was assigned convict number 15528. He now wears a white prison uniform and performs eight hours of daily labour with a monthly wage of Rs 524, in accordance with the Karnataka Prison Manual. Prison officials confirm that he is treated the same as any other life convict, serving his sentence under strict jail routines.

The case came to light when certain videos were circulated, according to Revanna. A victim from Holenarasipura initially filed a police complaint against him. The case was related to a rape complaint and other charges filed by a domestic worker from K.R. Nagar against Revanna.

Following the polling, Revanna fled the country. Upon his return to Bengaluru on May 31, 2024, he was arrested by Bengaluru Police. During the trial, Revanna appealed to the judge for a lesser punishment, citing his educational background as a BE Mechanical graduate and his record of always passing on merit.

The sentencing for Revanna in the rape case will follow in Bengaluru on Aug 3. The court has directed Revanna to seek bail from the trial court within 10 days. Revanna has not seen his family, including his parents, for six months.
