After a valiant effort, St Patrick's Athletic have been eliminated from the UEFA Conference League following a 3-2 defeat to Besiktas in the third qualifying round second leg. The aggregate score now stands at 7-3 in favour of the Turkish side.

The match, played in Istanbul on Thursday evening, started on a high note for the Irish team as Conor Carty converted a penalty kick awarded by VAR in the 2nd minute. Ryan McLaughlin doubled St Pat's lead in the 34th minute, making it 2-0 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate.

However, Besiktas responded before halftime with a goal from Demir Ege Tiknaz, a deflection off Joe Redmond. Early in the second half, Tammy Abraham equalized for the Turkish team to make it 2-2 on the night.

Later, super-sub João Mário scored the decisive third goal for Besiktas in the 79th minute. Despite St Pat's best efforts, they were unable to overturn the deficit.

St Patrick's Athletic adopted a compact defensive 4-5-1 formation after their early goals, but Besiktas dominated possession and ultimately used their superior quality and depth to secure the win.

The first leg was played at Tallaght Stadium, where Besiktas had comfortably won 4-1 with Tammy Abraham scoring a hat-trick. In the second leg, Chris Forrester entered the fray just shy of the third-quarter mark for St Patrick's Athletic.

Stephen Kenny made a triple substitution on 56 minutes, bringing on Mason Melia, Simon Power, and Jamie Lennon. However, it was not enough to change the course of the game.

The referee for the match was A Nobre from Portugal. The aggregate score now means that St Patrick's Athletic's UEFA Conference League campaign has come to an end.

The focus for St Patrick's Athletic now shifts to Sunday's FAI Cup third round encounter against Shelbourne at Richmond Park.
