In initial discussions, South Korea's Lee Jae Myung emphasizes the indissoluble bond between Korea and Japan.

In a significant move during the G7 summit in Canada, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba locked horns in their first bilateral talk. The discussion revolved around strengthening their relationship and increasing regional security cooperation.

The two leaders were determined to strengthen bilateral ties, focusing on building a more mature and future-oriented partnership as they celebrate the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations. They agreed to resume shuttle diplomacy and enhance dialogue and cooperation between their governments and agencies.

A major focus of the talks was trilateral security coordination with the United States. The leaders understood the need to address mounting geopolitical tensions and security threats from North Korea, including its missile and nuclear developments and past abductions of Japanese nationals. They stressed the importance of close cooperation in the face of an increasingly severe and complex security environment in Northeast Asia.

Despite some differences, President Lee emphasized that their shared interests outweighed the divergences. Both leaders recognized that as close neighbors sharing geographical proximity and economic complementarities, they stand to gain significantly from working together.

To foster more active dialogue and collaboration, the leaders agreed to promote meetings between ministries and agencies based on mutual respect and trust. They also aimed to pursue shared national interests in economic and cultural areas.

This meeting, the first between the two leaders since Lee took office, signals a strong intent to build on the recent diplomatic thaw and promote stability amid global shocks such as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and regional challenges.

  1. In the midst of international debates over general-news topics like wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the leaders expressed their opinion that strengthening their alliance could provide a more secure environment.
  2. As both countries share a common economy with complementarities, their continued diplomatic dialogue and cooperation could lead to significant advancements in the economy.
  3. The leaders recognized the importance of addressing environmental issues, such as those posed by North Korea's missile and nuclear developments, as part of their commitment to promote a peaceful and sustainable environment.
  4. Moving forward, cultural exchange and understanding will be crucial in fostering a stronger relationship between the two countries, contributing to a more harmonious international community.
