In France, the granddaughter of the founder of Yekaterinburg passed away.

In the heart of Paris, at the ripe age of 96, Maria Ivanova-Tatischeva, a descendant of Vasily Nikitich Tatischev in the sixth generation (that's seven generations back), has recently passed away.

The Museum of History in Yekaterinburg shared the news, praising her lifelong dedication towards enlightening minds in France and Russia, introducing the youth to the rich tapestry of Russian culture, and partaking in a garrison association in Paris. She supported educational institutions in Russia, too.

Maria's fascination with the Ural region was noteworthy. She celebrated Yekaterinburg's 300th anniversary, kept tabs on the 'Tatischev Readings,' and expressed gratitude to the mayor of Kushva for the installation of a monument to her great-grandfather.

Back in 1723, Vasily Tatischev, in conjunction with Wilhelm de Gennin, founded Yekaterinburg. A monument in their honor stands proudly in the city center, near the entrance to the Historical Square.

As for Maria's role in promoting Russian culture, Russian aristocrats of her era often played a critical part in fostering cultural exchanges between Russia and other European countries, specifically France. They engaged in hosting cultural events, patronizing artists, and participating in diplomatic efforts to further cultural understanding.

Though specific details about Maria's activities are scarce, one can assume her role involved similar forms of cultural and diplomatic initiatives.

  1. The Museum of History in Yekaterinburg, in a heartfelt statement, acknowledged Maria Ivanova-Tatischeva's involvement in both general news and politics, given her contributions to bridging the cultural gap between France and Russia.
  2. Beyond her role in enlightening minds about Russian culture in France, Maria Ivanova-Tatischeva also showcased her interest in politics, as she actively supported educational institutions not only in France but also in Russia.
