In Eugene, Kenya's elite runners smashed the world record during a competitive race

In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, the 2025 Wanda Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, witnessed a historic moment as Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebet broke the women's 5000m world record. With a groundbreaking time of 13:58.06, Chebet became the first woman ever to run the event under 14 minutes.

Chebet's remarkable achievement surpassed the previous world record of 14:00.21, a mark she led the race from start to finish, powering away in the final lap to secure her historic victory. This record adds to her already impressive resume, as she also holds the world record in the 10,000m, set last year at Hayward Field with a time of 28:54.14.

Unfortunately, no new record achievements were reported for Olympic champions Faith Kipyegon and Armand Duplantis at this meeting. Kipyegon, who is also a world record holder, improved her own previous best time in the 1500m, but the specifics of her performance were not detailed. Duplantis, the pole vault champion from Sweden, failed to reach the world record height of 6.29 meters in his event.

In other notable performances, US long jump Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall won the Diamond League meeting with a jump of 7.07 meters. Gudaf Tsegay, who finished third in the 5000m, narrowly missed the previous best time of 14:00.21 minutes set at the same venue on September 17, 2023. Malaika Mihambo, the 2022 World Championship long jump gold medalist, finished in second place with a jump of 7.01 meters.

The Diamond League meeting in Eugene also saw the winning shot put world champion, Chase Jackson from the USA, fall just one centimeter short of her national record set just a week ago with a throw of 20.94 meters. Yemisi Ogunleye, the Olympic champion in the shot put, failed to qualify after three attempts with a throw of 18.83 meters and finished ninth in a strong field.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen, the 2022 European champion in the 5000m, lost contact with the leaders early on in her first track race of the year and finished 21st.

The Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, proved to be a significant event in the world of athletics, with Beatrice Chebet's world record performance in the 5000m being the highlight of the day. The focus now shifts to the next major athletic events, where these champions and many others will continue to push the boundaries of human performance.

Sports enthusiasts were thrilled by Malaika Mihambo's impressive second-place finish in the long jump at the Diamond League meeting, showing her athletic skills are still a force to reckon with. Meanwhile, the sports community eagerly anticipates future performances from these athletes as they prepare for the next major athletic events.
