Heavy Rain and Flooding Hit Several Regions in Belarus in Late July

Belarus experienced unusual weather patterns during the summer months of 2025, with some regions facing heavy rainfall and flooding. According to data from Belhydromet, the country's weather service, the average temperature for the first two summer months was +18.2°C, slightly higher than the norm of +18°C.

June was cooler in Belarus by 0.4°C compared to the norm, while July was warmer. However, the temperatures in these specific months were not unusually high or low compared to the norms given earlier.

The heaviest rainfall events occurred mainly from July 28 to July 31, 2025. During this period, several regions, including Sluck, Salihorsk, Asipovichy, Dzyerzhynsk, Ninsk, Barysaw, and the Minsk region, including the capital city Minsk, faced heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding.

On July 15, Minsk also experienced heavy downpours. The most affected areas, particularly in late July, recorded rainfall of more than 30 mm in an hour, with some locations experiencing dangerous rainfall of more than 50 mm in 12 hours. These rainfall amounts are rare, occurring in Belarus once every 12 years.

The heaviest rainfall locations during June and July 2025 were notably concentrated in late July. For instance, very heavy rain (94 mm) was recorded at the Malevichskaya Rudnya hydrometeorological station, and very heavy rain (39.5 mm) also fell in Berezino.

Weather forecasts indicated continued heavy rains and thunderstorms into July 31, 2025. In response to the severity of the downpours and storm risk, warnings were issued by Belhydromet and other agencies.

Elena Komarovskaya, a specialist, stated that Belarus is warming faster than the global trend, with an average temperature increase of 0.4 degrees Celsius every 10 years, compared to a global increase of 0.1 to 0.3 degrees. Temperatures are rising in every month in Belarus, but most notably in winter and early spring.

Over June and July, there was nearly a third more rain than normal in Belarus, totaling 222 mm. In June, there were 9 to 20 days with more than 0.1 mm of rain, compared to a norm of 8 to 11 days. In July, there were 8 to 18 days with more than 0.1 mm of rain, also above the norm of 9 to 11 days.

  1. The unusual weather patterns experienced by Belarus in summer 2025, including heavy rainfall and flooding, might prompt further discussions in the field of environmental science, exploring potential links between climate-change and enhanced precipitation events.
  2. The significant increase in rainfall recorded in June and July 2025 in Belarus, compared to normal levels, could suggest broader implications for weather patterns in the future, as routinely observed in scientific studies about climate-change and atmospheric conditions.
