Shining a Light on Climate Action: Bavaria's Dark Hour for Our Planet
In Bavaria, the region will momentarily darken during 'Earth Hour' observance. - In Bavaria, the lights will be switched off during Earth Hour.
Hey there!
In a powerful gesture for climate protection, Bavaria will be joining the global crowd and dipping its lights during the "Dark Hour" on March 25th. From 8:30 PM onwards, buildings and monuments worldwide, including some famous Bavarian locations, will switch off their lights for a solid hour.
You can expect the following iconic sites to join the dark side: Neuschwanstein Castle, the radical lightshow-loving Allianz Arena in Munich, Regensburg Cathedral, the regal Kaiserburg in Nuremberg, and the enchanting Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg. Oh, and did we mention Bayreuth? Their lights won't come back on until tomorrow, with notable sites like the Margravial Opera House plunging into the shadows.
The motto for this year is "Lights off, Voices on – for a livelier planet". The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is urging people to raise their voices along with dimming their lights. Choirs and solo singers are invited to jump on the bandwagon and join the chorus for climate protection. "Singing binds us together and is a potent way to capture attention and make our demand for stronger climate action heard", says the WWF.
Now in its 19th year, this event has gained momentum, with over 600 cities in Germany alone participating.

As a side note, there isn't much info on which other Bavarian sights will be dimming their lights for Earth Hour. But looking at past years and some popular spots in Upper Bavaria, it's a possibility that destinations like:
- Marienplatz – with its bustling atmosphere and clock tower, it could join the global initiative.
- Nymphenburg Palace – as an extravagant former royal residence with extensive gardens, it might black out some lights in the park.
- Asamkirche – this baroque chapel with stunning Rococo interiors could subdue its brightness for Earth Hour.
- Viktualienmarkt – while primarily a market, its traditional beer garden could make an appearance in the Dark Hour event.
To confirm participation, it would be best to reach out directly to the management or local tourism boards for these landmarks. Keep an ear out for more updates! Stay green! 🌱💡💔
