Kamala Harris Speaks Out on Trump Era Capitulation

In a candid interview on CBS's The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her surprise at the level of capitulation during Donald Trump's term. Harris, who announced on Wednesday that she would not run for governor of California and, for the time being, elective politics altogether, did not rule out a 2028 presidential run.

During the interview, Harris criticized congressional Republicans for enabling Trump instead of upholding democratic institutions. She highlighted that Republicans in Congress have largely failed to push back against Trump's actions and instead continue to support him, which undermines the integrity of democracy.

Harris specifically criticized the Republican Party's regressive stances on issues of race, gender, and immigration tied to Trump's presidency. She pointed to the party's retrograde positions such as harsh immigration policies and attacks on women's reproductive rights, reflecting a broader failure to offer a positive or inclusive vision for America compared to the chaos she described under Trump.

When asked about the system being broken, Harris responded that it is evident that the system is broken, but it does not mean giving up. She believes that the systems are not strong enough to defend our most fundamental principles and that many people who consider themselves guardians of the system and democracy have capitulated.

Harris suggested that congressional Republicans have failed to stand against Trump as he amasses power. She accused some people of using the excuse of "riding out the storm" to be feckless. Harris stated that she wants to travel the country and listen to people, without the transactional nature of asking for their vote.

Harris's appearance was tied to the release of her upcoming book, 107 Days, a behind-the-scenes account of her short presidential campaign. The interview was generally friendly, with Colbert asking a list of questions that were not overly confrontational. Harris was greeted by a sustained ovation from the Late Show audience during her interview.

In her first post-2024 election interview, Harris predicted a number of things that Trump is now doing, including alienating allies and giving tax cuts to the rich. She did not specify who she was referring to when she said that there are a lot of people who think they are riding out the storm as an excuse to be feckless. Harris remains committed to being part of the fight.

  1. Kamala Harris believes that the failure of the educational system to provide a positive and inclusive vision for America, as evidenced by regressive stances on issues like race, gender, and immigration, is a reflection of a broader systemic issue.
  2. In terms of travel, Harris wants to listen to people across the country, seeking insights that extend beyond the transactional nature of electoral politics.
  3. Harris's critique of the current political environment extends beyond the Trump era, calling out policy-and-legislation, including tax policies and foreign affairs, that she predicts will lead to future general-news events.
