In an impromptu conversation, Lars Ulrich reveals his enthusiasm for performing at the Sphere in 2026, having been deeply impressed by U2's performance there.
Metallica Eyeing Potential Las Vegas Residency and Super Bowl Half-Time Show
In an interview with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show on August 6, 2023, Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich revealed that the band is in talks to do a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere venue in autumn 2026. However, nothing has been officially confirmed or announced yet.
Ulrich, who is a fan of the Sphere venue, did not confirm or deny that Metallica has a green-lit residency at the state-of-the-art $2.3 billion venue. He did express interest in the project, stating that it's "something that we're looking at" for after their 2026 "M72" world tour concludes.
The Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in 2023, is renowned for its advanced immersive technology, including a massive 160,000-square-foot LED screen with 16K clarity and an immersive audio system. Metallica’s lead guitarist Kirk Hammett has praised the venue, highlighting the Sphere’s use of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge production technology as a perfect match for Metallica’s ambitious live performance style. Hammett also suggested that the Sphere offers a "crazy experience".
While the residency is widely reported and the band is positively inclined toward the project, an official confirmation or announcement detailing dates and specifics has not yet been made public as of August 2025.
In addition to the potential residency, Ulrich also expressed his interest in performing at the Super Bowl half-time show in San Francisco, his band's hometown. However, he acknowledged that the decision for the Super Bowl half-time show is not in Metallica's hands. No details have been confirmed regarding Metallica's potential Super Bowl half-time show performance.
Ulrich was "blown away" by what he saw during the opening night of U2's run at the Sphere in 2023, and Vital Vegas has suggested that Metallica might be eyeing up a run of shows in autumn 2026. The band has not commented on these rumours.
As the world eagerly awaits official announcements from Metallica, fans can only speculate about the possibility of seeing the iconic metal band perform at the Las Vegas Sphere and potentially the Super Bowl half-time show in the near future.
