"In Alligator Alcatraz, Rutilio Escandon claims improved treatment; news surfaces of 122 Mexican detainees"

The Mexican government has taken decisive steps to safeguard the rights of Mexican migrants detained at the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida. This comes amidst heightened U.S. immigration enforcement, particularly at the Alligator Alcatraz facility, which is supported by federal emergency management funds and involves agencies such as ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Rutilio Escandón Cadenas, the Mexican consul in Miami, has been at the forefront of these efforts. Last week, Escandón Cadenas visited Alligator Alcatraz for the fourth time, where he reported an improvement in the treatment of detainees and the organization of the facility with each visit.

During his visit, Escandón Cadenas emphasized the support that the Mexican detainees receive from their authorities and the government of Mexico, represented by President Claudia Sheinbaum. He also advocated for a change in the policy regarding detaining people who come to contribute to the United States.

To strengthen its legal strategy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has held working sessions with lawyers from the Legal Assistance Program for Mexican People. These sessions focused on preventive and consular protection actions to strengthen the dissemination of information about legal alternatives for Mexican people. Collaboration between judicial authorities and federal agencies was identified during these working sessions.

In addition, the SRE has strengthened its legal strategy in Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas. Foreign Affairs, under the charge of Chancellor Juan Ramón de la Fuente, highlighted these actions.

Escandón Cadenas also sent a message to the families of the Mexican detainees, encouraging them not to be afraid or scared. He stated that the detainees are not criminals, but people who come to work in the United States.

The SRE's actions aim to protect the rights and well-being of the Mexican community in the United States. Last week, there were 246 detainees at Alligator Alcatraz, and currently, there are 122. The "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center has a bad reputation, but the SRE's efforts suggest a commitment to ensuring that the rights and well-being of Mexican migrants are protected within the U.S. enforcement system.
