In Africa, Petros triumphs following a silver victory, dedicated to his mother
German Marathon Runner Amanal Petros Wins Silver at World Championships
In a thrilling finish at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, German marathon runner Amanal Petros clinched the silver medal. His time was 2:09:48 hours, just 0.03 seconds behind the gold medalist, Alphonce Simbu from Tanzania.
Petros, who fled from Ethiopia to Germany in 2012, dedicated his silver medal to his mother who lives in the conflict-ridden Tigray region of Ethiopia, about 10,000 kilometers away from Tokyo. Unfortunately, due to the lack of electricity and internet in her village, she was unable to personally experience her son's achievement.
Petros trained for four months at 2,500 meters altitude in Kenya for the World Championships. His preparations were intense, with fellow marathon runner Richard Ringer spending the last few days with him in the room, pushing each other to their limits. Ringer finished 13th in the race with a time of 2:11:45 hours.
This is the second German marathon medal for men in the history of the World Athletics Championships. The first was won by Waldemar Cierpinski in 1983 in Helsinki. Cierpinski, who is 75 years old, was happy for Petros but admitted that he would have wished him gold.
The race had a photo finish, with Petros and Simbu crossing the line almost simultaneously. Iliass Aouani from Italy won the bronze medal.
Despite Petros' narrow miss for the gold, Ringer was very happy for his fellow runner. He emphasized the need to "enjoy the moment," reminding everyone that athletics is not just about winning, but also about the journey and the experiences along the way.
At the previous World Championships in Budapest two years ago, German athletes went home without a single medal. This silver medal marks a significant improvement for German marathon running.
Petros' big goal now is to invite his mother to Germany for a marathon. He hopes to share his success with her in person and give her a chance to experience the excitement of a marathon firsthand.
The World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have come to a close, but Petros' silver medal will undoubtedly be a lasting reminder of his achievement and the hard work that went into it.
