Hamburg's Never-Ending Coaching Carousel: HSV's Failed Return to the Bundesliga
UnRelenting Management Turmoil: A Review of HSV's Second Division Coaches Over Seven Years, Including Eight Different Managers - In a span of seven years, the club, Hamburger SV, experienced eight different head coaches, with roles beneath the top tier.
The mighty Hamburger SV (HSV) finds itself stuck in the 2. Bundesliga for the seventh consecutive season, yearning for the glory days in Germany's top tier. This weekend, they meet SSV Ulm in a vital home match, aiming to wipe out this prolonged second-division stint (20:30 CET/Sky and Sport1). Over the past seven years, an astounding eight coaches have led the team in their relentless quest to reclaim the Bundesliga spot.
The Reign of the Grey-Haired Tactician, Christian Titz (54, March 2018 - October 2018)
Upon the departure of Bernd Hollerbach, Titz, a seasoned coach who had excelled with HSV's U21 team, took the helm. Although he couldn't prevent the Red Shorts' relegation from the Bundesliga after the 2017/18 season, he was given a contract till 2020. After a disappointing 0:0 draw against VfL Bochum, he was sacked following the tenth matchday as the club's leaders believed the season's goals were at risk. Currently coaching 1. FC Magdeburg, Titz continues to confound as his team fights for promotion.
Wolf, the "Trainer Wonderkid" (44, October 2018 - June 2019)
The young prodigy, Hannes Wolf, who previously guided VfB Stuttgart back to the Bundesliga, took the reins when Titz was shown the door. After six victories in seven games, Hamburg became the Autumn Champions. After a disheartening 0:2 defeat against Union Berlin, the HSV slipped out of the promotion spots for the first time on the 31st matchday, finishing the season in fourth place. The team announced Wolf's departure before the final matchday, and he now manages the German U20 national team.
Hecking Consolidates, Then Crumbles (60, July 2019 - June 2020)
A seasoned coach with previous experience at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Dieter Hecking was brought in to steady the ship. His defensive approach managed to keep them in the assault for relegation after the 25th matchday. However, the team squandered six points in added time in four games, sinking their chances of promotion. The low point was the disastrous home loss against SV Sandhausen on the final matchday, which ultimately sealed their fourth-place finish and Hecking's departure. Currently, he battles to save VfL Bochum from relegation from the Bundesliga.
Thioune's Time at the Helm (50, June 2020 - May 2021)
Daniel Thioune's positive results with VfL Osnabrück earned him a place on the HSV's shortlist of potential coaches. The team's season started with a disappointing defeat against Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the cup. Yet, Thioune led the team to the Autumn Championship once again, thanks to his adept tactical prowess. However, a devastating 1:2 defeat against SV Sandhausen on the 29th matchday beginning the end of his tenure. Two games later, he was dismissed. Since then, Thioune has been coaching Fortuna Düsseldorf, who harbor dreams of promotion.
The Legend Himself, Hrubesch Takes Over (74, May - June 2021)
After Thioune's departure, Hrubesch, a club icon and former coach of the German U21 national team, assumed command. Although the team started strong, their form dwindled, and they fell short of promotion. Unable to extend Hrubesch's contract beyond the end of the season, the Red Shorts once again had to search for a new leader.
HSV's European Cup Winners: The Tall One Leads (June - September 2021)
Following Hrubesch, the legendary Uwe Seeler, also known as "The Tall One," led the team for the last three games of the 2020/21 season. Despite an impressive 5-2 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg, they couldn't better their fourth-place finish in their third season in the second division. After a stay at the club's youth development academy, Seeler returned to his role overseeing the youth development.
A New Era Begins with Walter (49, July 2021 - February 2024)
Tim Walter, whose first head coaching stint was at Holstein Kiel, joined the HSV coaching staff. Despite promising starts, the Red Shorts couldn't break into the Bundesliga, losing in the relegation playoffs to Hertha BSC in 2021/22 and VfB Stuttgart in 2022/23. Recently dismissed in February of last year, Walter has since parted ways with English second-tier side Hull City.
Baumgart's Unsuccessful Stint (53, February 2024 - November)
Steffen Baumgart, an avid fan of the HSV, took over the club in February. Despite having a brief taste of success, as the team reached the top of the table momentarily, his tenure ended in disappointment. The team's poor form saw them placed eighth on the 13th matchday, leading to Baumgart's dismissal. He is now coaching Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
The Interim and Permanent Coaches: Polzin (34, February 2024, and since November 2024)
Currently, Merlin Polzin holds the reins at HSV. Born and raised in Hamburg, he has been an integral part of the club, having worked as assistant coach and youth coach for both HSV and VfL Osnabrück. After a brief stint as interim coach during the transition period, he took charge permanently in December 2024. The young coach led the HSV from eighth place to the top of the table, inching ever-closer to reclaiming the illustrious Bundesliga spot. With the potential for promotion just days away, Polzin and the HSV push to return to the Bundesliga in spectacular fashion.
