In a political move, former New York Governor David Paterson endorses Mayor Adams following his support for Cuomo.
David Paterson Endorses Eric Adams in New York City Mayoral Race
David Paterson, the first Black governor of New York and a prominent figure in Harlem politics, has thrown his support behind Mayor Eric Adams in his re-election bid. This endorsement comes as a surprise, as Paterson previously endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, who lost.
In a statement, Paterson described Mayor Adams as dynamic, articulate, receptive, courageous, and outspoken. He also praised Adams' approach to governance, stating that Adams is taking no prisoners in his re-election bid.
Mayor Adams, in response, expressed gratitude for Paterson's endorsement and stated that it could offer a jolt to his campaign. Adams also noted that they have yet to fully tell their story and that Paterson's ability to articulate their campaign could help them continue to get their story out.
The endorsement of Paterson, who is now the highest-profile Democrat to back Adams, who is running as an independent, comes at an interesting time in the race. According to the latest Siena poll, Mayor Adams has 7% support, placing him in fourth place behind Curtis Sliwa (12%), Maya Wiley (10%), and Kathryn Garcia (9%). In contrast, the poll shows a two-man race between Mamdani and Cuomo, with Mamdani leading with 44% support and Cuomo following with 25%.
Paterson has expressed doubt about Mamdani's ability to fulfill his campaign pledges, such as free buses and universal child care. He likened Mamdani's candidacy to a "forest fire" and does not believe Mamdani will be able to pay for his proposals.
In the Democratic primary, Paterson also backed a consolidation proposal, but it seems that none of the candidates are interested in this proposal now. It is unclear if Paterson's suggestion that if one of the other candidates were to drop out, Mayor Adams could have a better chance at winning, has any impact on the current race.
A spokesperson for Cuomo's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Paterson did not specify which other candidate he was referring to when suggesting that their removal could benefit Adams.
Mayor Adams has been involved in an unprecedented corruption indictment, but he has managed to avoid becoming a prisoner himself. The indictment was on campaign finance and bribery charges, but these charges have since been dismissed.
The endorsement of Paterson is a significant development in the New York City mayoral race and could help Adams gain momentum in the final weeks leading up to the election. It will be interesting to see how the race unfolds and if Adams can capitalize on Paterson's endorsement to secure a second term in office.
