Improved Punctuality Achieved by the German-Danish Shipowners' Alliance - Improved Deliveries by the German-Danish Shipping Consortium: Enhanced Reliability in Maritime Transportation

The German-Danish shipping alliance, Gemini, launched by Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk in February 2025, has shown significant improvement in punctuality since its inception. According to maritime research firm Drewry, the alliance's on-time schedule reliability ranged between 87% and 89% in June 2025, a remarkable leap from its initial rates of 48% to 67% in February.1

The improvement is attributed to strategic cooperation between the two major shipping companies, allowing better coordination of vessel schedules and resources. The optimized network operations under the Gemini cooperation have also played a significant role, improving planning and execution from February onwards.1

Effective management of port congestion, a common cause of delays in container shipping, has been another key factor in Gemini's improved punctuality. Despite congested ports, the alliance has managed to maintain improved punctuality, indicating successful mitigation measures.1

The improved punctuality has several positive impacts on the container shipping industry. Higher reliability in schedule translates to increased trust and satisfaction among customers, facilitating smoother supply chains and reducing inventory holding costs. Improved punctuality can help strengthen competitive advantage in an industry where delays and unpredictability directly affect costs and customer retention.2

The success of such alliances in boosting punctuality may promote further collaborations and network-sharing among carriers, potentially influencing wider shipping industry practices. It signals a positive trend in container shipping, showing resilience and adaptability despite prevailing challenges like port congestion and geopolitical trade uncertainties.3

The Gemini alliance uses a hub-and-spoke system, similar to airlines, and benefits from large ports like Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, and Tanger Med (Morocco) for transshipment. These ports had fewer problems compared to congested ports in Europe and Asia, contributing to the alliance's improved punctuality.1

More than 80 percent of the world's traded goods are transported by sea, according to UNCTAD figures, making the improvements in punctuality by the Gemini alliance a significant development for global trade.

Community policy discussions should prioritize the positive impact of improved employment policies within the maritime industry, specifically highlighting the success of the Gemini alliance in enhancing sports-like efficiency and punctuality in container shipping. The employment policies implemented by the Gemini alliance, such as effective management of port congestion and the use of a hub-and-spoke system, serve as valuable examples for future industry practices, fostering a more sports-like, streamlined, and reliable shipping industry.
