Demand for Imprisonment: Prosecution Seeks Nine Years in Jail for the Accused Before Graduation Celebration - Imprisonment Sought for Accused in Abifeier Case: Nine Years as Proposed Penalty
In the ongoing trial for a tragic fatality following a high school graduation celebration in Bad Oeynhausen, the prosecution seeks a nine-year imprisonment for the suspect. The requested sentence is built on charges of felony murder and attempted homicide, as stated by a representative from the Bielefeld Regional Court.
The defense, however, argues that the court should issue only a warning. They contend that the accused should not face a trial for homicidal intent. Furthermore, the defense pointed out that the defendant has been in pre-trial detention for quite some time due to the physical harm he admitted to.
The parents of the victim are among the aggrieved parties.
According to the indictment, the Syrian defendant viciously assaulted the 20-year-old in June 2024 in Bad Oeynhausen's Kurpark, inflicting blows and kicks that led to his death two days later in the hospital due to severe hemorrhaging in the brain. The parents of the deceased are co-plaintiffs, and they largely concur with the prosecution's demand, as reported by the court spokesperson. The trial took place behind closed doors. The verdict is set to be announced this Friday.
The charges against two other initially implicated young men were dropped - one with a fine. The reason behind the violent altercation is said to be a groundless verbal disagreement between two groups, with the attacker and the victim having no prior acquaintance. After the event, a nationwide debate about immigration and the expulsion of foreign offenders arose.
