Street Arrest Stirs Controversy: US to Free Turkish PhD Student

Imprisoned Turkmen woman to gain freedom in the United States

In a scene reminiscent of a dystopian thriller, several men descended upon a PhD student at Tufts University, surrounding her and whisking her away into custody. The dramatic arrest, captured on video, sparked outrage across the US. The student was reportedly detained for purportedly supporting Hamas. After weeks in detention, a judge has put an end to this controversial episode.

The US President's spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, weighed in on the situation, expressing outrage at the judge's decision. According to Leavitt, lower court judges should not dictate foreign policy decisions. She reiterated that a US visa is a privilege, not a right.

This is not the first time foreign students have been targeted in the US. Activist Mahmud Chalil, a former Columbia University graduate and green card holder, was arrested several weeks prior. He was picked up from his New York apartment and transferred to a detention center in Louisiana.

Interestingly, the individual in question could potentially be identified as Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student who was detained in Louisiana for over six weeks. Her ordeal began when her student visa was revoked following her co-authoring an opinion piece criticizing Tufts University's response to Israel's war in Gaza and advocating for divestment from companies with ties to Israel. Despite experiencing health issues while in custody, including asthma attacks, Ozturk was eventually granted bail by a federal judge. The situation underscores the challenges faced by students who express politically charged views criticizing Israel's policies. However, this case does not directly involve accusations of supporting Hamas.
