An Unjust Detention Ends: Turkish Student Granted Freedom in US
Imprisoned Turkmen woman in the U.S. set for release
In a seemingly questionable series of events, a PhD student at Tufts University find herself arrested and imprisoned for approximately six weeks in the US state of Massachusetts. A judge has now intervened, ruling her detention unjustified and ordering her immediate release.
In the chilling surveillance footage that sparked public outrage in the US, several individuals in civilian clothing, some wearing hoodies, are seen approaching the visibly frightened student, circling her, and then leading her away. This arrest, according to the US government under President Donald Trump, was due to alleged support for the terrorist group Hamas.
The focal point of this controversy was an opinion article that the student co-authored in 2024 for a university news outlet, criticizing Tufts' response to Israel's actions in Gaza. Some individuals took this critique as supportive of Palestine, or perhaps even mistakenly as support for Hamas. However, it's crucial to note that no concrete accusations or solid evidence against her directly supporting Hamas were presented by the government. The primary 'evidence' was the op-ed itself.
When asked about the case, Trump's spokesperson Karoline Leavitt claimed she had yet to be apprised of the judge's decision. She added, "Lower court judges should not shape the US's foreign policy." She further stated that a US visa is not an inherent right, but a privilege.
This incident is part of a growing trend of detainments of international students in the US, with allegations of supporting Hamas. Mahmud Chalil, an activist and a graduate of New York's Columbia University with a green card, is one such case who was arrested in his apartment several weeks ago and transferred to a detention center in Louisiana.
As Rumeysa Ozturk begins her road to freedom, her lawyers contend that her detention violated her constitutional rights, specifically her right to freedom of speech and due process[1][2]. Grateful for her release, Ozturk is now permitted to resume her studies, aiming to complete her PhD as quickly as possible[3]. Nonetheless, this case remains ongoing, with immigration proceedings continuing separately[3].
