A woman's home in Connecticut morphed into a living nightmare as she allegedly held her stepson captive for well over two decades. Kimberly Sullivan, now under arrest, faced the court on Wednesday following her stepson's miraculous escape from the "house of horrors," according to the "New York Post."
Sullivan’s tormented stepson, now 32, managed to break free in late February when a fire occurred in their shared residence. Guided by the overwhelming desire for his independence, he intentionally set the blaze as a means of escape. The authorities discovered him, not before he'd endured years of torment.
The police report reveals a copybook definition of neglect and abuse. Sullivan's stepson lived as a skeleton of his former self, weighed down by 20 years of suffering. He was empowered by a mere 30 kilograms and hadn't received any medical or dental treatment in years. Even the most basic rights—food and water—were withheld; he was left with only two cups a day and resorted to drinking from the toilet bowl.
To make matters worse, he was forced to survive by stealing leftovers from school dumpsters and using bottles and newspapers for hygiene. A former neighbor, contemporaneous with the stepson, recalled a brief encounter years earlier when he'd wave at her from a closed window—never to be seen again.
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo spoke out in sympathetic sorrow: "The anguish this victim endured for over two decades is heart-wrenching and difficult to fathom." While the case required intense investigative work, the results will ensure justice eventually prevails.
Lawyers, however, maintained Sullivan's innocence. "The claims against her are shocking, yet they are merely allegations," the attorney stated, emphasizing that the defendant was distraught upon hearing the allegations. "We remain optimistic that she will ultimately be acquitted." Sullivan now faces charges including aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment.
