Impresa CEO tackles tech giants, SIC's future, and past media deals

Francisco Pedro Balsemão, CEO of Portuguese media group Impresa, has shared his views on several pressing industry issues. In a recent statement, he addressed concerns about tech giants, past business deals, and the future direction of SIC, one of the country’s leading broadcasters. Balsemão dismissed claims that Impresa misled anyone during the 2018 sale of its magazine division to Trust in News. He stated the deal was conducted transparently and fairly.

On the topic of television, he argued that SIC should not focus solely on ratings leadership. Instead, the broadcaster should balance audience numbers with quality programming and journalistic integrity. The CEO also voiced frustration with the growing dominance of major tech platforms. He criticised companies like Google and Facebook for what he described as an increasing sense of arrogance in their dealings with media partners. Despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Balsemão noted that the advertising market had remained stable as of late March. The conflict had not yet caused any noticeable downturn in ad spending.

Balsemão’s comments highlight both challenges and stability in the media landscape. His concerns about tech platforms and SIC’s strategy reflect broader debates about the future of journalism and broadcasting. Meanwhile, the resilience of advertising revenue suggests cautious optimism amid global uncertainties.
