In an candid chat with US news channel Fox News, German Chancellor Fritz Merz (CDU) sheds light on the rise of Anti-Semitism in Germany and his measures to combat it. When asked about the strategies he's implementing to tackle the issue head-on, Merz emphatically declares, "We're doing everything in our power to minimize the number of hate incidents. Sadly, we're grappling with a version that appears to have made its way into our country alongside a massive influx of migrants since 2015."

The phrase "imported Anti-Semitism" was a heated topic of discussion a few months ago at the independent initiative, "Word of the Year." This year's jury, composed of publicist and political scientist Saba-Nur Cheema and Meron Mendel, publicist, historian, educator, and director of the Anne Frank educational institution, dubbed "imported Anti-Semitism" their personal "Word of the Year 2024."

The expression implies that Anti-Semitism has become a prevalent problem due to the influx of migrants. The term is often employed by extremists to exclude Muslims and people of immigrant origin, diverting attention away from their own Anti-Semitic leanings[1][3].

Anti-Semitic occurrences escalated dramatically in Germany in 2024

The most recent annual report by the Federal Association of Research and Information Centers on Anti-Semitism (RIAS) documented 8,627 Anti-Semitic incidents in 2024, a 77% increase from 2023. Of these, 5,857 were categorized as "Israel-related Anti-Semitism"- more than double the number from the previous year. RIAS defines this as encompassing instances where Jews in Germany are falsely accused of government actions, when Israel is maliciously portrayed, and its right to existence is questioned[1][4]. A right-wing extremist background was recorded in 544 cases- the highest number since the national comparison began in 2020[1].
