In a daring move, John Francis Crowley left his lucrative career to found a biotechnology company with a mission: to drive research forward and find a cure for Pompe disease, a rare and debilitating genetic disorder. This brave decision would later inspire the 2010 film 'Extraordinary Measures,' a 106-minute drama directed by Tom Vaughan.

Crowley, portrayed by Brendan Fraser in the film, joined forces with Dr. Robert Stonehill, played by Harrison Ford. Together, they established their own company, facing numerous challenges along the way. One of the most significant hurdles was securing funding, with Crowley managing to secure $10 million, despite Stonehill's difficult character causing issues in negotiations.

The film, produced by CBS Films, follows the duo's journey as they work tirelessly to develop an enzyme to treat Pompe disease. However, they faced stiff competition from other teams, making their task all the more arduous.

Their efforts bore fruit when the children, Megan and Patrick, received life-saving treatment after Crowley organised a sibling study with Stonehill's help. This breakthrough led to the approval of Myozyme, a drug that has since saved the lives of hundreds of Pompe disease patients.

However, success came at a price. The company faced financial constraints and differing views between Crowley and investors, leading to further conflicts. Crowley was eventually fired from the company, and Stonehill left the project.

In a twist of fate, Crowley sold the company to a large pharmaceutical corporation to secure financial stability, but this brought new challenges. Despite these setbacks, Crowley's story offers a powerful testament to perseverance and the lengths one man will go to for the sake of his family.

'Extraordinary Measures' also offers insight into the challenges faced by families with rare diseases, despite criticism for feeling superficial and clichéd at times. The film, which was primarily shot in Portland, Oregon, stars Keri Russell as Aileen Crowley, John's wife, and Courtney B. Vance as Marcus Temple, a lawyer who aids the family in their legal battles.

Jared Harris portrays Dr. Kent Webber, a scientist who works alongside Crowley and Stonehill, while Diego Velazquez and Meredith Droeger play Patrick and Megan Crowley, respectively. Harrison Ford also served as an executive producer for the film.

In the end, John Francis Crowley's story is one of hope, resilience, and the power of human determination. Despite the challenges he faced, his dedication to finding a cure for Pompe disease has saved countless lives and inspired countless more.
