Impending Weather Event: Approaching Low-Pressure System to Deliver Intense Rainfall over Various Regions; Access Complete Forecast Details below
Heavy Rainfall to Impact Multiple Regions in India from August 18-21
India is bracing for intense monsoon activity over the next few days, with various regions expected to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The weather pattern is being influenced by cyclonic circulations over the Northeast Arabian Sea, Central Pakistan, and Punjab.
Northwest India and Western Coastal Maharashtra to Bear the Brunt
The regions most likely to be affected by heavy to extremely heavy rainfall are Northwest India, particularly Himachal Pradesh, and Western Coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai and the Konkan region.
Himachal Pradesh is predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places seeing extremely heavy rain. This could lead to flash floods and landslides, especially in districts like Mandi and Kangra. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall on August 18, 21, 22, and 23.
Mumbai and the Konkan region, including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, are expected to see extremely heavy to heavy rainfall. Mumbai has already recorded over 1,000 mm of rain for the month by August 20, nearly double its monthly average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed these regions under a yellow alert for August 21 for heavy rain at isolated locations.
Other Regions to Experience Moderate Rainfall
Delhi and Bengaluru are expected to experience intermittent or patchy rains, although not described as extremely heavy. Delhi had rain with up to 88% precipitation chance, while Bengaluru had patchy rain and extended monsoon influence.
Other Regions Affected by Intense Rainfall
Beyond Northwest India and Western Coastal Maharashtra, other regions are also expected to experience intense rainfall activity. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, and Bihar are likely to be affected due to the Bay of Bengal low-pressure system. The depression is expected to cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by the forenoon of August 19.
Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining Ladakh are likely to receive intense rainfall between August 18-19. Assam and Meghalaya have a flooding risk in low-lying areas between August 20-23. The northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are expected to witness persistent rainfall throughout the week, with heavy rainfall predicted.
The low-pressure area over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal is predicted to move northwestwards and intensify into a depression within 24 hours. This could lead to heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh on August 20 and 21.
Preparing for the Rain
Residents in the regions expected to be impacted by heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, such as Himachal Pradesh, Mumbai, and the Konkan region, should prepare for flooding, landslides (Himachal), and urban waterlogging (Mumbai and the Konkan region).
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has assured farmers that no trade agreement will harm their interests. West India, including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Marathwada, is set for multiple spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rains predicted in Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra between August 18-19.
