Imminent Heavy Rainfall Warnings in Bihar: Orange Alert Declared for Various Districts

News Article: Comprehensive Rain Alerts Issued for Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive rain alerts for the state of Bihar, advising citizens to prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next few days.

The orange alert, issued for West Champaran and Gopalganj districts, warns of flooding in low-lying areas due to the heavy rainfall. Citizens are advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing under trees to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

In addition, a yellow alert covers all 36 districts, including Patna, with winds of 40 kmph and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning. The yellow alert also extends to South Bihar, where rain accompanied by strong winds and thunder is expected on September 18.

The weather conditions have not resulted in any additional temperature drops or humidity changes across Bihar. However, the maximum temperature in Patna dropped significantly to 27.7°C, marking a 9-degree decrease from the previous day. The temperature drop across 28 districts has provided relief from the recent spell of sultry weather.

Patna recorded 42mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Bhavanpur in Purnia received the highest precipitation at 126.2mm. Despite the heavy rainfall, the IMD has not issued any new travel advisories for specific districts in Bihar.

Farmers are advised to exercise caution while working in fields during this unstable weather period. The Ganga River is flowing just 2 centimeters below the danger mark in Patna, Munger, Vaishali, and Bhagalpur, heightening flood threats. The flood conditions are worsening in Munger district, affecting 33 panchayats across six blocks and impacting over two lakh people.

Conditions are expected to gradually normalize on September 19-20, with light to moderate rainfall continuing in several districts. The current conditions show temperatures ranging between 24°C-26°C with 95% humidity and winds from the southeast at 6 kmph.

Citizens are urged to stay informed and follow the advice of local authorities during this period of unstable weather. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
