Immigration Enforcement Activities Instigate Student Reaction

Worcester, Massachusetts, a city known for its support of sanctuary policies, has experienced a heightened presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during President Donald Trump's second term, which began in January 2025.

The Trump administration's immigration policies became notably more aggressive, with a focus on ICE raids and sanctuary city challenges. The administration revoked restrictions that limited ICE enforcement in sensitive locations such as courthouses, making operations in these areas more frequent and assertive.

In Worcester, this policy change likely contributed to a heightened presence of ICE, as the city is known to support sanctuary policies that discourage cooperation with federal immigration enforcement to protect undocumented immigrants.

The administration's emphasis on expedited deportations, invoking measures like the Alien Enemies Act for swift removal with limited due process, has led to increased fear of deportation, disruption of families, and diminished trust in local institutions to provide safe access to justice.

Despite this, Heather Arroyo, an attorney at Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, has stated that there has not been a large-scale ICE raid in Massachusetts. Worcester's Mayor, Joseph Petty, has sympathized with those who are now in fear of deportation and is unaware of any recent ICE raids in Worcester.

Eight communities in Massachusetts are sanctuary cities, including Amherst, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Concord, Northampton, and Somerville. However, Worcester is not a sanctuary city.

The Latin American Student Organization at Holy Cross (LASO) has expressed solidarity with the Latinx community and immigrants, while expressing disappointment with the Holy Cross administration's lack of acknowledgement regarding the mental and emotional toll on students.

Several events have been lined up by student organizations to facilitate conversations regarding immigration, including a Pax Christi meeting, a DEI/Policy Impact discussion, and a fishbowl discussion.

The stArt on the Street Festival took place on Worcester Park Avenue last Sunday, featuring vibrant music, dance, and art.

It is important to note that ICE scammers have been impersonating ICE officials and demanding personal information, threatening deportation. If you receive such a call, it is advised to hang up and contact local law enforcement.
