Immigration discussions set to commence on the 1st of October
Quebec Immigration Consultations Resume Amidst Controversy
The Quebec government has announced that public consultations on immigration planning will resume on October 1, with Minister Roberge presenting various immigration threshold scenarios, including targets for permanent and temporary immigration. However, the consultations will be held over fewer weeks than originally planned, sparking concerns from opposition parties.
The CAQ government has proposed three target scenarios for permanent immigration: 25,000, 35,000, or 45,000 new residents per year. Meanwhile, the Quebec Parti has proposed to reduce temporary immigration by half and limit permanent immigration to a maximum of 35,000 new residents per year.
These proposals have not gone uncontested. Liberal MNA André A. Morin has accused the CAQ government of poor planning in immigration matters and improvising with immigration planning. He expressed concern about the negative impact of temporary immigration quotas on international students, particularly the proposed 13% reduction in the number of study and work permit holders by 2029 compared to 2024.
The Quebec Solidaire MNA Guillaume Cliche-Rivard also expressed concern about the real listening of the Minister of Immigration during these consultations. PQ MNA Alex Boissonneault, on the other hand, criticized the CAQ's record on immigration, calling it the worst in Quebec history. He suggested that the upcoming consultations will highlight the CAQ's responsibility in the immigration issue and demonstrate the PQ's more rigorous plan.
The number of requests for audience participation in these public consultations has not been disclosed by the Citizens' Contact Commission due to confidentiality or procedural reasons. Opposition parties regret that not as many organizations and stakeholders will be heard due to the shorter duration of the consultations.
It's important to note that the Quebec government is introducing targets for temporary immigration for the first time. However, no information about the specifics of these targets was provided in the current paragraph.
The economic impact of immigration on Quebec is significant, making these consultations crucial for the future of the province. The upcoming consultations are expected to shed light on the CAQ government's immigration policies and provide an opportunity for opposition parties to present their alternative plans.
PQ MNA Alex Boissonneault suggested that the consultations will also demonstrate the PQ's more rigorous plan and highlight the CAQ's responsibility in the immigration issue. The outcome of these consultations will likely shape the future of immigration in Quebec.
