Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) frees Purdue University student, who was unexpectedly apprehended during a visa meeting
Purdue University student Yeonsoo Go has been reunited with her family following an unexpected detention by ICE during a routine visa hearing.
Go, who came to the U.S. in 2021 on a religious dependent visa, had her visa extended until December 2025. The visa extension was confirmed by Davis, a close acquaintance, who also holds a piece of paper showing the extended visa validity.
Despite her current visa status, Go was detained during a visa hearing last week. The hearing concluded with a date set for her return to court, but Go was immediately taken into custody in front of her mother, suggesting the detention was unexpected and occurred during a standard check-in process.
The reason for Go's detention remains unclear. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin previously described Go as an "illegal alien" who had overstayed her visa. However, the available information does not specify the exact reason for ICE's decision to detain her.
Go spent several days in a facility in Louisiana, according to the ICE database. During her transfer back to New York, she saw a rally taking place in front of the courthouse, organised by the Episcopal Diocese.
The detention of Yeonsoo Go drew massive backlash across faith and local New York communities. New York Assemblymember Amy Paulin is "overjoyed" that many individuals spoke out for Go, describing the pain, fear, and uncertainty Go and her family endured as something that should never have happened.
Kim, Go's mother, is relieved that her daughter is back home but remembers that many others continue to contend with similar circumstances. Kim hopes that Go's release will bring attention to the plight of others in similar situations and lead to changes in the immigration system.
As of now, the Department of Homeland Security has not provided a reason for Go's release, and ICE did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment on the reasons behind Go's detention.
- The sudden detention of Yeonsoo Go, a Purdue University student, during a routine visa hearing has raised concerns within the general-news arena, with many questioning the reasons behind her unexpected imprisonment.
- The politics surrounding Go's case have been a topic of discussion, as her release has been met with widespread support from faith and local New York communities, highlighting the need for reform in the immigration system to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
